How to wire a new light. Place the bare end of the black wire from the cable in the wall with the bare end of the black wire from the light fixture. Trace the mounting box on the ceiling where the light fixture will be mounted. Determine a location for the light switch. Before doing any electrical work always shut off power to the house at the main breaker. Loosen and remove the screws from the cover for the light switch that operates the light using a screwdriver. The neutral for the new light is taken from the receptacle and spliced to the new white wire and to a pigtail that connects back to the receptacle.
Remove the old ceiling light. The box ears should rest tightly against the plaster. Bend the second arm of the first support around the box. It should be 48 from the floor. Use a phillips screwdriver to unscrew the mounting screws and bring down the light fixture. Twist the two ends together three or four times with a pair of pliers.
Connect the neutral white wires with a wire connector. Untwist the fixture wires from the house wiring. Wiring the new light unscrew the wire nut holding the two black wires together on your existing light. Disengage the wires by twisting the wiring cap until it comes free.
