Wiring A 4 Way Switch
How to wire a 3 way switch with 4 lights. At the lights the hot source is spliced to the black wire running between lights it does not connect to the lights. A 3 way switch is utilized on each individual end with one or more 4 way switches between both 3 way switches. Once youre done youll be able to control a light from two switches. The 3 wire cable enters through the top of the first switch box. Momentary switches only stay active so long as theyre actuated. The two switches appear to be connected by a 3 wire plus ground cable.
Here 3 wire cable runs between l1 and l2 2 wire cable runs from the last light to sw1 and more 3 wire cable runs from sw1 to the 4 way switch and then to sw2. The wiring is more complicated than a traditional single pole switch but well explain how to make the connections. If you know how to wire a 3 way switch you will have no problems with a 4 way switch. E lastly if your light fixture isnt wired yet connect the light fixture to the 2 wire romex black and white wires only which leads to your new 3 way light switch 2 and you should have completed your 3 way light switch circuit. They dont always have to be actuated by a pushdown. When nothing is hooked up there is power in the 2 wire plus ground cable on the upstairs switch.
There is only the single 3 wire plus ground in the downstairs switch box and only two 2 wire plus ground cables at the fixture. Wiring a 3 way light switch is certainly more. The red insulated wire connects to either one of the 2 unused terminal screws shown in the image above to be on the top left and right sides of both 3 way switches. Connect 3 wire cable in the first switch box.
