How to connect boat battery cables. Clean both battery posts with a wire brush. If your circuit needs 100 amps of current the battery cable will be absorbing 2 amps 24 watts of current because of its resistance leaving 98 amps. I have done it backwards and never had a problem. Technically with battery lugs the first crimp should be made at the end of the lug closest to the wire. This is backwards from the way industrial compression lugs are crimped. Lets say that your length of battery cable is connected to a 12 volt battery and has a voltage drop of 2 which is considered adequate for almost all electrical systems.
At the source or battery you will read 12 volts using a voltage meter but at the other end of the cable your voltmeter will only read 1176 volts 12 volts 2. Locate the battery within your boat and switch the marine battery switch to off while you remove the old battery. Connect the positive cable to the solenoid relay or starter. Remove the positive cable from the solenoid relay or starter. Connect the circuit breaker to the power connection on the control switch and connect the power connection to the engine. Disconnect the negative cable from the engine block.
The second crimp is then made closest to the hole. Connect the neutral black port of your house battery to the distribution panel on your boat. Once the battery is disconnected gently lift it out of the battery box and place it out of the way.
