Over time with exposure to the elements a cv boot can become dry or brittle and crack or tear. There could be a little excess around the ball and spring but still plenty of lube where you need it.

Grease coming out of ball joint boot. With hands at the 6 oclock and 12 oclock you can try to wobble to wheel. That will test for the ball joint. First look to see that the rubber boots holding the grease inside the ball joint are in good shape. Some ball joints come lubricated for life and are therefore incapable of being greased the paradox though is that they dont usually live very long. Id wipe them off and check every couple days. Now you want to clean off the zerk to avoid any contaminates following the grease inside.

If it is from the rubber boot it could be because the rubber boots around the joint itself are not seated right this happens.
You should see bright. If it is out of the metal nubby fitting then this a good possibility. Also the pressure changes the part goes through in normal driving might force a little out. If it is torn or possibly even gone then you should at least. When a cv boot cracks or tears it will usually leak grease onto the inside of the wheel. The uppers are pressed in and can only be replaced by changing the whole arm. I was hoping i could just get a replacement boot but that is not the case. Okay so i blew threw my boot for the upper ball joint getting my a arm off. If the boot is torn or just plain gone chances are so is the ball joint. Next attach the grease gun to the zerk.
